Yes, that is common knowledge regarding the land border. In my article I was explicitly was talking about the ferry being unavailable for non-CIS citizens, which is surprising, considering foreigners can arrive to Sochi from Trabzon and to Batumi from Odessa etc. Why not Sochi from Batumi, or Batumi from Sochi? Another political pressure point?

Of course the visa is overpriced - that's another example of political blackmail. A UK visa for 6 months costs about $90.

If you have any sens of politics, than you know you can't travel by train or bus from Batumi to Sochi, and that the border is closed for non-CIS citizens (as well at Kazbegi). And sorry to say, but 504 Dollar is way overpriced!

$504 USD for a Russian visa? Really? Wow. Thanks for sharing the very useful/practical info on not being able to take a train to Sochi from Batumi if you are not the holder of a Georgian, Russian, Armenian or Azerbaijani passport... I'll have to remember that next time I want to travel to Sochi from Georgia ;)

Bro,
Been looking forward to reading the first part of your (and Andy's) trip, you must be glad to be back on the road again.
I'm interested to hear your thoughts/impressions of Sochi - there was a huge Russian presence at the Olympics here in Vancouver back in February - all of whom were promoting the 2014 games. However I hear there's a lot of ethical and moral issues surrounding the redevelopment of Sochi between now and 2014. Neighbourhoods apparently levelled to make room for Olympic venues etc. Anyway - I await your next stage of writings soon
