Use Your Bank-Holiday Weekend To Enter A Microadventure Competition

Since returning to the UK I’ve been dabbling with the ‘microadventure’ phenomenon, which I see as a fantastic way to get my outdoor and adventure kicks in between planning bigger future projects (of which more news very soon!).

Alastair Humphreys has been leading the way in the blogosphere with his ‘Year Of British Microadventures’. With the bank-holiday weekend coming up, and with Al running a competition to win £1000 worth of outdoor kit from Howies, it’s the best excuse you could wish for (not that you need one) to get out of the house and do something adventurous for a weekend. I promise you — the afterglow will last you several weeks!

His rules are very simple:

  1. Your journey must start and finish at your front door (or your office)
  2. You must cover, through non-motorised means, a circular journey of a distance that is moderately difficult for you
  3. It must take at least 24 hours (ish)
  4. You must sleep outdoors in a place you have never been before (really, really ideally not in a tent)
  5. You must have an outdoor swim
  6. Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men

One more nugget of inspiration? Well, fancy that, I’ve just re-edited my short packrafting video. I think this is a good example of a microadventure — a trip that took an evening to plan and less than a hundred quid to pull off, resulting in the most fun I’ve had in years:
